Oddkin

A rotating circle of book clubs and community work days, rooted in the practice of making kin in unexpected ways.

Gatherings for unconventional kinship. In a time of isolation and division, Oddkin is our practice of making kin in unexpected ways: mostly through book clubs, with the occasional garden volunteer day or community textile day. We bring what we have, whether that’s time, skills, tools, or a good book, and let it circulate, trusting there is enough when we share it. Come as you are. Leave with something you didn’t arrive with.

The name comes from the concept of oddkin, offered by Donna Haraway in Staying with the Trouble and explored in Prentis Hemphill’s What It Takes to Heal.

What to expect

Rather than simply meeting outside, we'll return to the same garden plot throughout our work together, allowing you to build a relationship with a particular piece of land over time. As the seasons shift, we'll witness its cycles of growth, decay, dormancy, and emergence. Our time there will shift too: some days we might tend the garden, move, or get our hands in the soil; others we may simply sit, notice, and talk.

Garden Sessions are 50 minute individual sessions, offered seasonally from September–December and February–May at a communal garden just a five-minute drive from the office. To make the most of comfortable outdoor conditions, availability is limited.

Are garden sessions therapy?

You bet. Garden Sessions are therapy—just in a different setting. We can bring the same approaches, intentions, and goals from our office-based work into the garden, while staying curious about what the natural world might have to teach us. The land gives us something else to notice, respond to, and be in relationship with as our work unfolds.

Investment

Garden Sessions follow the same fee structure as office-based therapy. Your rate remains the same whether we meet indoors or out.

A note about our fee scale
The Sustain rate reflects the true cost of providing this work and a living wage. Taproot also offers rates above and below Sustain as part of our commitment to collective care and greater access to therapy. You'll be invited to thoughtfully self-select the rate that best reflects your circumstances, resources, and needs.
